Keeping rats out of Cicero bungalows and alleys

If you have found a burrow behind the garage or droppings in the basement, you are dealing with the Norway rat, the animal built for the Cicero alley. Keeping rats out of a bungalow is less about traps alone and more about denying them the food, water, and harborage that the alley network hands them.

Why the alley is the real problem

Cicero is a grid of brick bungalows and two-flats with a continuous alley behind every block, lined with detached garages, trash carts, and old fences. Norway rats live in burrows and travel those alleys at night, so the block, not the single yard, is the unit that matters. A rat denning under one garage forages several yards up and down the run.

Older sewer lines add a hidden route. Rats can travel and shelter in breaks in aging pipe, which is why a problem sometimes appears far from any obvious burrow. Reading the alley for burrows, runways, and droppings is how an experienced local exterminator figures out where a colony actually lives.

Cut the food and water

Rats stay where they eat. Keep trash cart lids closed and latched, pick up fallen fruit and pet food, and do not leave bird seed or dog dishes out overnight. In the gangway and yard, clear the heavy ground cover and stacked material that lets them move unseen.

Water counts too. A dripping spigot, a clogged downspout, or a pooling low corner gives a colony what it needs through dry spells. Fixing those removes a reason for rats to settle against your building.

Close the ways in

A rat can push through a gap the size of a quarter. Check the garage door corners, the gaps around utility and gas line penetrations, the base of old wood fences and sheds, and any broken foundation or vent screen. Sealing these with rodent-resistant material keeps a burrowing rat from getting under the slab or into the basement.

Sealing works best paired with knocking down the current population. Tamper-resistant stations and traps set on the active runs reduce the numbers while the entry points are closed, so the block does not simply refill.
